Overview

The School Community
At Salesian College, we are conscious of the value of our support groups in the enhancement of
school activities. Our parents and families are encouraged to participate fully in all aspects of
College life.
Regular communication between parents, teachers and students is an important part of our school
community and occurs through the Student-Diary, the fortnightly Newsletter and Parent/Teacher Interviews.
Being a 'school of choice' Salesian College depends on the support of our families who have chosen
to join the College community. This support is expressed through active involvement in the school
community, by meeting financial commitments, maintaining contact with teachers and by participation
in the activities of the College Community: Parents and Friends Association; Rupertswood Sports
Management Committee (incorporating the Rupertswood Football, Netball, Basketball and Cricket Clubs); Heritage
Society and other initiatives undertaken from time to time.
In 2003 Salesian College introduced a multi-age homegroup system based on the vertical
organisation of Student Homegroups and College Houses. The Homegroups are based on eight Houses
within the College: Bunjil; Colliton; MacKillop; Mahoney; Maiocco; Mannix; Naughton; and O'Grady.
Each house has approximately 130 students who are organised into five Homegroups, with
approximately twenty-four students in each, ranging from year 7 to year 12. The eight Houses
and their smaller vertical Homegroups are integral to the College's intimate sense of community
and promotes in our students, a deep sense of belonging. The cross-age nature of the Homegroups
is also an important feature of our encouragement of student-mentoring and leadership qualities.
The vertical House system provides many opportunities for students to shine regardless of their
talents and creates a safe and friendly atmosphere of inter-House rivalry.
